             abstract = "The necessity of mapping the cerrado's physiognomies in the 
                         Para{\'{\i}}ba do Sul valley led the authors to calibrate the 
                         available vegetation indices in relation to field evidences of 
                         campo-cerrado, pasture, and forest. The study area is located in a 
                         portion of the cerrado domain strongly impacted by human 
                         activities. The physiognomies were identified in the field with 
                         botanic specimens collected. After the cerrado physiognomy were 
                         confirmed a satellite image were geocoded and processed to obtain 
                         19 vegetation indices available at IDRISI for Windows. Afterwards 
                         each vegetatrion index of each physiognomy were extracted and 
                         statistically analysed in order to find out which one performed 
                         better the distinction of each physiognomy. The result were PVI1 
                         with the best performance, followed by NDVI and SAVI.",
